Where to Stay in Phuket: Patong vs Kata vs Karon vs Phuket Town (2026)

Choosing the right beach area matters more than the hotel. Here is how Patong, Kata, Karon and Phuket Town differ, and who each suits.

Quick answer: Choose Kata or Karon for families and first-timers, Patong for nightlife and convenience, Phuket Town for budget and culture, and a quieter west-coast beach for a couples' retreat. Pick the area first, then the hotel.

Why does the area matter more than the hotel?

Phuket is large, and travel between beaches can take 30 to 60 minutes by taxi. A hotel in the wrong place turns every outing into a long, costly ride. Choosing one area and staying there for the whole trip saves hours.

Patong

The busiest and most developed beach. Bangla Road, malls, restaurants and shops are all within a short walk. It is convenient and lively, and it is also loud and crowded. Good for travellers who want nightlife and variety. Less suited to quiet family stays.

Kata and Kata Noi

A smaller, calmer resort area with a good beach and a decent choice of restaurants. Popular with families and couples. It is quieter at night than Patong but still has enough to do. A strong default for a first trip.

Karon

A long, wide beach with a more relaxed feel and a broad range of hotels, from budget to resort. Good value, and close to Kata so you can combine them.

Phuket Town

Not on the beach, but cheaper, more local and good for food and culture. A fine choice if you plan to spend most days on tours and want to save on accommodation. See our 5-day Phuket itinerary for how it fits into a plan.

Quieter beaches

Further north and south of the main strip are calmer beaches with resorts and private-pool villas. They suit couples who do not mind taxis. Expect higher prices and fewer restaurants within walking distance.

What about vegetarian and Indian food?

Patong, Kata and Karon all have Indian restaurants. If you eat vegetarian, ask for no fish sauce or oyster sauce when ordering Thai dishes, and look for the Thai vegetarian sign (yellow flags with red lettering) at some restaurants.

What should a hotel have for Indian families?

A pool, breakfast included, an in-room kettle and a location within walking distance of food. Check recent reviews for cleanliness and noise rather than relying on star ratings alone, a lesson from our Bangkok area guide.

How do you combine Phuket with Krabi?

Stay three to four nights on Phuket, then move to Ao Nang or Railay. Phuket to Krabi: how to travel has the transfer options, and Phuket vs Krabi helps with the split.
