Phuket vs Krabi: Which Is Better for Indian Travellers? (2026 Guide)
Phuket is bigger, busier and easier. Krabi is quieter, more scenic and better for couples. Here is how to choose, and when to do both.
Quick answer: Choose Phuket if you want choice: lots of beaches, nightlife, restaurants, easy flights and plenty of hotel types. Choose Krabi if you want scenery and quiet: limestone cliffs, Railay Beach, island hopping and a slower pace. If you have six nights or more, do both, since they are only a few hours apart.
What is the main difference between Phuket and Krabi?
Phuket is an island with its own airport, a large tourist infrastructure and several distinct beach towns. Krabi is a province on the mainland coast, with Ao Nang as the main base and some of the most dramatic rock scenery in Thailand.
Phuket is the easier trip. Krabi is usually the prettier one. Neither is a bad choice, and the right one depends on what your days should look like.
Which is better for first-time visitors from India?
Phuket is simpler for a first international trip. Flights are more frequent, there is a wide spread of vegetarian and Indian restaurants, and you can get around by taxi or app with little planning. If you are travelling with parents or children, the choice of hotels with proper pools and facilities is wider.
Krabi suits travellers who already know they want beaches and boats rather than a busy resort town.
Which is better for a honeymoon?
Krabi for most couples. Railay Beach, sunset longtail boat rides and the quieter evenings around Ao Nang give you the setting couples usually imagine. Phuket works if you want a private-pool villa, spa resorts and a livelier evening scene. Our own Thailand honeymoon route splits time between both for exactly this reason.
Which is better for nightlife and shopping?
Phuket, by a wide margin. Patong has the late-night strip, and Phuket Town has night markets and cafes. Krabi has bars and a night market in Ao Nang, but it is a small scene by comparison.
Which is cheaper?
Krabi is generally a little cheaper for hotels and food, mostly because there is less high-end resort supply. Phuket has a very wide range, so you can spend very little or a great deal depending on the beach you pick. Boat tours cost about the same in both. Which has better beaches?
Phuket has more beaches, and a few of them, like Kata and Karon, are good for swimming in the dry season. Krabi has fewer swim-friendly beaches near the town, and its appeal is the surrounding islands, such as Poda, Chicken and Tup, and Railay. If you want to lie on a long beach all day, pick Phuket. If you want to look at something extraordinary from a boat, pick Krabi.
Can you visit Phuket and Krabi in one trip?
Yes, and for most week-long trips it is the best answer. A common split is three or four nights in Phuket and three in Krabi, linked by ferry or road. Read how to get from Phuket to Krabi for the options and timings.
When should you go?
Both sit on the Andaman coast, so the season is the same: roughly November to April is dry and calm, and the monsoon months bring rougher seas and some boat tours are cancelled. See the best time to visit Phuket and Krabi for the month-by-month view.
Do Indians need a visa for Phuket and Krabi?
Indian passport holders currently enter Thailand visa-free for up to 30 days, for arrivals from 15 September 2026. Rules change, so confirm before you book. Our Thailand visa update has the details, and the Thailand visa page is where to start an application if you want the paperwork handled.
