Phuket to Krabi: Ferry, Road or Flight? How to Travel Between Them
Phuket to Krabi is a short hop, but the options are not equal. Here is how the ferry, road transfer and flight compare.
Quick answer: For most travellers, a private transfer (roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by road) is the simplest option, a shared minivan is cheaper but slower (sources give about 2.5 to 5 hours), and the ferry (about 1.5 to 3 hours, plus transfers at each end) is the scenic one. Flying rarely makes sense for such a short distance. Always allow extra time and avoid tight connections.
How far is Phuket from Krabi?
Roughly 165 to 170 km by road (about 70 km by sea), depending on where you start and finish. It is a straightforward trip and does not need a long day.
Option 1: Private transfer
The most comfortable and flexible. A private car picks you up from your hotel and drops you at the next one, with stops if you want them. It costs more than a minivan, but it is door to door, and it is the best choice for families, older travellers and anyone with a lot of luggage. We can arrange this as part of a custom trip.
Option 2: Shared minivan or bus
Cheaper, with pick-up from set points, so you may wait or change vehicles. Fine for budget travellers with light luggage. Check reviews of the operator, and keep valuables with you rather than in the luggage hold.
Option 3: Ferry
A scenic option from Rassada Pier in Phuket, about 4 km from Phuket Town, to Nopparat Thara Pier in Ao Nang, with some boats continuing to Railay. Published fares are roughly ฿400 to ฿700 (about ₹1,150 to ₹2,000), and minivan fares roughly ฿250 to ฿450, but check current prices. Ferries are weather-dependent, and in the monsoon months services can be cancelled or delayed. Remember that you still need a road transfer at each end, so the total time is longer than the sailing time. Check the current timetable close to your travel date.
Option 4: Flying
Both Phuket and Krabi have airports, but a flight between them is not usually practical because of airport check-in times and transfers. The exception is when your international flight uses one airport on arrival and the other on departure. In that case, an open-jaw ticket (arrive in Phuket, leave from Krabi) can save a backtrack. Check this on our flight finder.
Which is best?
| Traveller | Best option |
|---|---|
| Family or older travellers | Private transfer |
| Budget or solo | Shared minivan |
| Scenic experience, dry season | Ferry |
| Open-jaw international route | Fly into one, out of the other |
When should you travel?
Avoid moving on the day of an international flight. Give yourself a buffer day or at least five hours of margin. If you are travelling in the monsoon, plan for ferry cancellations. See the best time to visit Phuket and Krabi.
