Where to Stay in Bangkok 2026: Best Areas, BTS Access and Why That Cheap Hotel Is Cheap
In Bangkok the difference between a great stay and a frustrating one is rarely the hotel. It is whether you can walk to a BTS or MRT station. Here is what each area is actually like.
Quick answer: In Bangkok, choose your area by walking distance to a BTS Skytrain or MRT station, not by the hotel photos. Traffic is bad enough that a hotel fifteen minutes from a station costs you an hour a day. Sukhumvit is the reliable default, Silom suits business trips and nightlife, Riverside is scenic but awkward for transport, and Khao San is cheap and loud and not where most people should start. Bangkok is safe, and a cheap hotel is cheap because of where it sits, not because of danger.
Is Bangkok safe for Indian travellers?
Yes. Violent crime against tourists is uncommon, the city is used to enormous visitor numbers, and Indian travellers are very well represented.
The real risks are the ordinary city ones: pickpocketing in crowds, overcharging by tuk-tuks and unmetered taxis, and the occasional gem or tailor scam aimed squarely at tourists.
Which area of Bangkok should you stay in?
Sukhumvit is the default and the right answer for most first trips. It is a long spine of the city served by the BTS, with endless restaurants, malls and hotels at every price. Asok and Phrom Phong are the convenient nodes. Nana and Soi Cowboy are the nightlife pockets within it, worth knowing so you can choose them or avoid them on purpose.
Silom / Sathorn is the business district. It has excellent transport, good food and a lively night scene around Patpong, and it is noticeably quieter on weekends. It is a strong choice for a short trip.
Riverside is the most beautiful area and the most awkward for transport. The hotels are spectacular, with river views, close to the old temples. You will rely on boats and taxis rather than the Skytrain, which is charming for three days and tiring for seven.
Siam is the dead centre, wall-to-wall shopping with a BTS interchange. It is best for a shopping-focused trip and light on atmosphere.
Khao San Road is the cheapest, loudest and most backpacker-oriented, and it is poorly connected to the rail network. It is fine if that is what you want, but a poor first choice for most travellers, and it is where drink-related warnings concentrate.
Ari or Thonglor is quieter and more local, with good cafes, and still on the BTS. It is a good choice for a second visit.
Why does BTS access matter so much?
Because Bangkok traffic is genuinely bad, in a way that changes what you can do in a day.
A three-kilometre taxi ride can take forty-five minutes at the wrong hour. The BTS and MRT are clean, cheap, air-conditioned and, importantly, immune to it. A hotel a two-minute walk from a station makes the city feel small. A hotel a fifteen-minute walk away, in that heat, means taking a taxi for every trip and losing hours.
When you compare two hotels, check the actual walking distance to a station on a map. That one number predicts your experience better than the star rating.
Why is that Bangkok hotel so cheap?
It is far from a station. By far the most common reason, and the one the listing will not mention.
It is on a long soi. Bangkok side-streets run deep. "Sukhumvit Soi 22" can mean a five-minute walk or a twenty-minute one, and the address looks the same either way.
It backs onto nightlife. Cheap and central often means noisy until 2am.
It is old. Bangkok's mid-range hotels turn over quickly, so recent reviews matter more than photos.
None of these is a safety problem. They are all convenience problems that quietly cost you time and taxi fares, often more than you saved on the room.
How long should you stay in Bangkok?
Three to four nights suits most itineraries, and then you move on to the islands or the north. Bangkok rewards a focused visit more than a long one, and Thailand's best value comes from combining it with somewhere else.
