Krabi 4-Day Itinerary: Hong Island Lagoon, Princess Lagoon, Klong Root Kayaking and Khao Phanom Bencha
Four days to see Krabi's hidden lagoons and jungle waterways: Princess Lagoon at Railay, the Hong Island lagoon, jungle kayaking and Khao Phanom Bencha National Park, with timings, tide warnings and rough costs.
Quick answer: Four days in Krabi is enough for Railay and Princess Lagoon, a Hong Island lagoon day, and a day of jungle kayaking plus Khao Phanom Bencha National Park, if you base yourself in Ao Nang and keep one day light. Prices below are indicative and converted at about ₹2.87 per baht.
Which of these places are actually in Krabi?
All of them, but they are in three different directions, which is why the itinerary is grouped by area:
- Princess Lagoon is at Railay, a hidden lagoon enclosed by limestone cliffs. It is reached on foot, not by kayak. One guide describes about a 15-minute climb down from the Railay viewpoint to reach it, so the trail is steep.
- Hong Island (Ko Hong) is a small archipelago inside Than Bok Khorani National Park, reached by longtail or speedboat from Ao Nang, Railay or Krabi Town. Its lagoon is the "secret-looking" one, and is the most famous spot in the group.
- Khao Phanom Bencha National Park is on the mainland, about 20 to 27 km north of Krabi Town depending on where you measure, roughly a 45 to 60 minute drive from Ao Nang. It is separate from the island and lagoon areas.
- Klong Root (Khlong Root) is a clear-water canal and mangrove-tunnel kayaking spot at Nong Thale in Krabi. Tours pick up from Ao Nang and run about 2.5 to 4 hours; many add a pineapple farm, swimming stop or lunch. It suits beginners.
Where should you stay?
Ao Nang. It has the most restaurants, tour desks and transfer options, and it is the easiest base for all three directions. See our Krabi 4-day overview for how Ao Nang compares with Railay.
Day 1: Arrive, Railay Beach and Princess Lagoon
Krabi airport is about 40 minutes from Ao Nang. Check in, then take a longtail boat to Railay in the afternoon. Walk to Phra Nang beach, then to the viewpoint trail down to Princess Lagoon. Wear shoes with grip, the trail is steep and muddy after rain, and take water. Do not attempt it in the dark or in heavy rain. Be back at the boat before the last sailing, which depends on the tide and weather.
Cost: longtail boat to Railay is usually a few hundred baht per person; confirm at the pier.
Day 2: Hong Island and its lagoon
A full-day boat trip. Typical Hong Island tours visit the main lagoon, a few beaches and a snorkelling stop, with lunch. Choose a morning departure so you arrive before the crowds.
Tide matters here. Sources disagree on whether the lagoon is easiest at high or low tide. One says boats can enter at high tide and that kayaking is the best way to explore at low tide. Ask the operator what the tide looks like on your date, and what they will do if the lagoon is not accessible. Reseller listings show a Hong Island day tour from Krabi at roughly US$38 to US$64 per adult (about ₹3,200 to ₹5,400) depending on longtail or speedboat, with lunch and snorkelling gear included. The national park fee of ฿300 per adult (about ₹860) is paid in cash and is not included.
Day 3: Klong Root kayaking and Khao Phanom Bencha
Morning: jungle kayaking at Klong Root. These tours paddle slowly along a clear stream through mangrove and forest, and are a calm experience, suitable for most fitness levels. Listings show about 2.5 to 4 hours with hotel transfer, guide, kayak and life jacket included, and one 2.5-hour tour was listed at around US$27 per adult (about ₹2,300). Ask whether the tour includes a swim stop and lunch.
Afternoon: Khao Phanom Bencha National Park. The park is famous for forest trails and waterfalls, and Huai To waterfall is inside it. Entry is about ฿100 for foreign adults and ฿50 for children, plus a small vehicle fee; one source lists ฿200, so check the current rate at the gate. The park is open about 8:30 to 16:30, so you must arrive in the early afternoon at the latest. There is no public transport to the park, so you need a hired car, a taxi or a songthaew. The waterfalls are strongest from about May to November, and weaker in the dry season.
Day 4: Free day or Four Islands
Keep this loose. If the weather has cancelled an earlier plan, use this day to catch up. Otherwise do the Krabi Four Islands tour or a spa morning before you fly out.
