What Is Actually Cheaper in Dubai Than India in 2026: iPhone, Gold, Perfume, MacBook — and What Isn't

Apple hardware and designer fragrance reliably beat Indian pricing; gold is cheaper per gram but carries its own rules. The structural point nobody explains: one phone in personal use sits outside your ₹75,000 allowance, while everything else competes for it. Shop in that order.

Quick answer: Apple hardware and designer fragrance are the two categories where Dubai reliably beats India — an iPhone 18 Pro Max is about ₹36,800 cheaper, and international perfume and beauty run 15–25% below Indian retail. Gold is cheaper per gram but carries its own customs rules. The structural point almost nobody explains: one phone in personal use is exempt from your allowance entirely, while everything else competes for the same ₹75,000. Shop accordingly.

Why is Dubai cheaper than India at all?

Tax, not generosity. The UAE charges 5% VAT and low-to-no import duty on most consumer goods. India stacks 18% GST on top of import duty on the same items.

That gap is structural and durable. It is why the difference persists outside sale seasons and why it widens as the item gets more expensive — the percentage compounds on a bigger base.

What is genuinely cheaper in Dubai for Indians?

Apple hardware is the standout. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is ₹1,79,900 in India against roughly ₹1,43,100 in Dubai. MacBooks and iPads follow the same pattern for the same reason, and the saving scales with the configuration you pick.

Perfume and designer fragrance are the most consistent win by percentage — commonly 15–25% below Indian retail, because Indian import markups on these brands are severe. Arabian attars from city perfumeries are better value than the airport shops.

Gold is typically ₹3,000–5,000 cheaper per 10g, and the souks sell 22K and 24K at transparent, rate-linked pricing with low making charges compared with Indian retail.

Sunglasses, watches and leather from international brands sit meaningfully below Indian pricing for the same tax reasons.

What is not worth buying in Dubai?

Anything where India's own market is efficient. Indian groceries, everyday clothing, generic accessories and most mid-range Android phones offer no real gap once you account for the trip.

Dates, chocolates and souvenir-grade goods are pleasant to bring home but are priced for tourists — buy them because you want them, not as savings.

How does the ₹75,000 allowance change what you should buy?

This is the part that should reorganise your shopping list.

India's duty-free allowance is ₹75,000, raised from ₹50,000 on 2 February 2026. Perfume, watches, sunglasses, gifts and clothing all draw down that single pool. Go past it and you are declaring and paying at the red channel.

But one mobile phone in genuine personal use is a personal effect and sits outside the allowance entirely — duty-free regardless of its value, provided it is unboxed and in use rather than sealed. Full detail in our customs guide.

So the efficient basket is: one phone, bought early in the trip and used, plus up to ₹75,000 of everything else. A traveller who buys a sealed phone and ₹70,000 of perfume has arranged their purchases in exactly the wrong order.

Is gold actually worth buying in Dubai?

Per gram, yes. After rules and duty, it depends on how much you buy.

Gold carries its own limits separate from the general allowance, and they differ by passenger and by how long you have been abroad. Small jewellery purchases for personal use are routine; buying meaningfully for investment is a different transaction that you should price out against Indian rates *including* the duty before you fly, not at the counter in Deira.

The souks are worth visiting regardless. Making charges are genuinely lower than Indian retail, which matters as much as the metal rate on worked jewellery.

Should you claim the VAT refund?

On perfume, watches and clothing you are not going to open — yes. The UAE refunds 85% of the 5% VAT on goods exported unused, minimum spend AED 250, validated at the airport before departure.

On the phone — no. That refund requires the item to leave unused, which puts a sealed box in your bag and roughly 38.5% Indian duty on your arrival. Take the refund on the perfume, not the iPhone.

When is the best time to shop in Dubai?

The Dubai Shopping Festival, roughly December to January, layers genuine promotions on top of the base pricing and lands in the best weather of the year. Summer, June to September, is punishing outdoors but has the cheapest flights and hotels, and Dubai's shopping is almost entirely indoors and air-conditioned.
