Is Gold Cheaper in Dubai Than India in 2026? The Real Per-Gram Maths

Dubai gold is cheaper, but not for the reason most people assume — and the saving that actually matters is not the rate. Here is where the difference really comes from.

Quick answer: Yes — Dubai gold is typically ₹3,000–5,000 cheaper per 10g than Indian retail. But the headline rate is the smaller half of the story. The bigger, more reliable saving is making charges, which Dubai jewellers apply at a fraction of typical Indian rates. On an intricate piece that gap can dwarf the metal-price difference. The catch is that none of it matters unless the purchase fits inside your customs allowance — and for a tourist, that allowance is smaller than you think.

Why is gold cheaper in Dubai?

Tax structure, not a better market.

The UAE levies 5% VAT and minimal import duty. India stacks import duty and GST on the same metal. Gold itself is a globally priced commodity — the London benchmark is the London benchmark whether you are standing in Deira or Dadar. What differs is everything layered on top.

That is why the gap is structural and durable rather than seasonal, and why it does not disappear during Indian sale periods.

How much cheaper is it per gram?

As a working benchmark, roughly ₹3,000–5,000 per 10g against Indian retail, which moves with rates and with what your local jeweller charges.

Treat that as a reference point rather than a quote. Gold rates move daily and both the Dubai and Indian numbers shift together; what stays stable is the structural gap between them.

What are making charges, and why do they matter more?

This is the part that decides whether a Dubai purchase is actually worth it.

Making charges are what the jeweller bills for crafting the piece, over and above the metal. Indian retail jewellers commonly apply a substantial percentage, and on detailed work it can be a large fraction of the final bill. Dubai's souk jewellers typically charge far less for equivalent work, and — crucially — they quote it separately and negotiate it openly.

The practical consequence: the more intricate the piece, the more you save in Dubai. On a plain chain, you are mostly buying metal and the saving tracks the rate gap. On elaborate, high-craft jewellery, the making-charge difference can exceed the metal saving outright.

If you are choosing what to buy, this is the single most useful thing to know.

Is Dubai gold real? What about purity?

Yes, and the regulatory position is genuinely strong.

Gold sold in Dubai is hallmarked and regulated, purity is stamped, and the trade is closely policed — the city's reputation as a gold market is a commercial asset it protects. 22K and 24K are both widely sold, and the pricing is rate-linked and transparent.

Ask for the purity certificate and the invoice showing weight, purity and price. You want these anyway for customs, so the habit costs nothing.

The scam risk in Dubai gold is low compared with the risk of simply overpaying by not negotiating — which brings us to the next point.

Should you negotiate?

Yes, on making charges. Expect to.

The metal price is fixed against the daily rate and is not really negotiable. Making charges are. Walking between two or three shops in the souk and asking each for their making charge on the same piece is normal, expected behaviour, and it is where the money is.

This is precisely the opposite of the Indian retail experience, where making charges are often presented as fixed. Do not carry that assumption to Deira.

When does buying gold in Dubai actually make sense?

When three things line up: you were going to buy the gold anyway, the piece has meaningful craft so the making-charge saving bites, and the amount fits your customs allowance or you are content to declare and pay duty.

If you are buying a simple chain within a small budget, the saving after a flight is thin. If you are buying wedding jewellery you had already budgeted for at home, the combined rate and making-charge saving can be substantial — this is the case where a Dubai trip genuinely pays for part of itself, in the same way the iPhone gap does.

What it is not is an investment strategy. Bars and coins are excluded from the jewellery allowance, and buying bullion abroad to carry home is a different activity with a different legal outcome.

The short version

Gold is genuinely cheaper in Dubai, by ₹3,000–5,000 per 10g on metal and considerably more on making charges for detailed work. Buy craft, not plain metal, if you want the saving to count. Negotiate making charges and not the rate. Get the invoice and purity certificate. And size the purchase against what you can actually bring home before you fall in love with a piece.

Next: where to buy gold in Dubai — the souks, the malls, and which is right for what.
