The Souk is hundreds of shops in a covered lane in Deira, and its advantage is pure density: you can price the same piece at four jewellers in fifteen minutes, which is precisely what creates the negotiating room. It is also where the lowest making charges tend to be found.

The caveats are real. It is crowded, hot outside winter months, and the constant approach from touts wears people down. If you are buying something significant, go early in the day and go with a clear idea of what you want.

Should you buy gold at the malls or the airport?
