Dubai for Wedding Jewellery in 2026: Does the Trip Pay for Itself?

Quick answer: On a wedding-sized purchase the Dubai saving is real enough to cover the trip. You save on both the metal (roughly ₹3,000–5,000 per 10g) and the making charges, which on heavy bridal work is where the real money is. The limit is not the shopping, it is Indian customs. As a short-stay traveller you have no special gold allowance, so a large purchase means declaring it and paying duty. Done openly, the trip pays for itself. Done as a way to avoid duty, it does not.

Is it worth flying to Dubai to buy wedding jewellery?

It depends almost entirely on the size of the purchase and the type of pieces.

The saving grows with the bill. On a small purchase, the flight and hotel eat it. On a wedding set, where Indian families routinely spend several lakhs, the combined metal and making-charge saving is a meaningful number against a return flight of around ₹20,000 and a few hotel nights.

The reasoning is the same as the iPhone price gap, just on a different scale. You were going to spend the money anyway, and the difference pays for the travel.

Where does the saving actually come from?

Two places, and most people only count the first.

The metal. It is typically ₹3,000–5,000 cheaper per 10g, because the UAE charges 5% VAT and minimal duty while India adds duty and GST on top.

The making charges. This is the larger and more reliable saving on bridal jewellery. Indian retail jewellers commonly add a substantial percentage for craftsmanship, and heavy traditional work is craft-intensive by nature. Dubai's jewellers quote making charges separately and negotiate them openly.

So the more elaborate the set, the better Dubai looks. A plain chain is mostly metal and the saving is modest. A bridal set is mostly labour, and that is exactly where the gap is widest.

What is the catch?

Customs, and it is a firm limit rather than a technicality.

The duty-free jewellery allowance people quote, 20g for men and 40g for women, requires having lived abroad for more than a year. A family flying over for a week does not qualify. Your purchase shares the general ₹75,000 free allowance with all your other shopping, and beyond that duty is payable.

For a wedding-sized purchase you will go over that, which is fine and entirely legal as long as you declare it through the red channel and pay the duty. What is not fine is walking through the green channel and hoping. Confiscation plus a penalty is far worse than the duty, and the duty is still smaller than what you saved.

Where should you shop for bridal sets?

Meena Bazaar in Bur Dubai first. It is the Indian retail district, and its jewellers stock the traditional designs (temple work, kundan, full bridal sets) that a general-market shop may not carry.

Deira Gold Souk for breadth and the sharpest making charges, if you are willing to compare across several shops.

Gold & Diamond Park if you want a piece made to order or you are buying diamonds, where certification matters more than the rate.

How long do you need?

Three to four days is comfortable. Wedding jewellery is not a one-afternoon purchase. You will want to compare, think it over, and return to a shop a second time, and the Souk is tiring in one long session.

What else should you buy while you are there?
