About

Why Visit Tahiti?

Tahiti is the largest and most culturally significant island in French Polynesia — the island that inspired Paul Gauguin, Herman Melville, and generations of artists, writers, and dreamers who came searching for paradise. Papeete, the capital, is a surprisingly cosmopolitan Pacific city of Parisian bakeries, Chinese-owned roulotte food trucks, and a vibrant market. The island's black sand beaches are a dramatic contrast to Bora Bora's white, but no less beautiful — set against the volcanic peaks of the Papenoo Valley interior. Teahupo'o is the site of the world's most powerful and terrifying surfing wave — host of the 2024 Olympics surfing event. The Heiva Festival in July celebrates Polynesian culture with dance, song, and outrigger canoe racing. Tahiti is the hub through which all travellers to French Polynesia pass — and deserves to be more than a transit point.
