Sri Lanka South Coast vs East Coast: Which Beach Is Right for Your Month?
If your leave is in December to March, pick Galle and Mirissa. If it is June to August, pick Trincomalee or Pasikudah.
Quick answer: Choose the south coast (Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Tangalle) for December to March and the east coast (Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay) for April to September. In October and November both coasts can be unsettled, so choose the hill country and cultural sites instead.

December to March: south coast plus hill country is the classic combination. April to September: Cultural Triangle plus east coast avoids the monsoon on the south. If you have only 5 nights, stay on one coast and skip long transfers.
Is the east coast worth the extra travel time?
In July and August, yes, because the south coast sea is rough. The east coast's calm bays are the main reason.
What about whale watching?
Mirissa's season is typically November to April. Boat trips follow strict rules; ask your operator how they follow them.
