Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka From India: Two Monsoons, So the Answer Depends on the Coast
Sri Lanka has two monsoons, so one coast is always dry. December to March suits the south and west; April to September suits the east.
Quick answer: There is no single best month for Sri Lanka, because two monsoons hit different coasts. For the south and west coast (Colombo, Bentota, Galle, Mirissa) and the hill country (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella) go December to March. For the east coast (Trincomalee, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay) go April to September. The Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Anuradhapura) is driest from about May to September. Since 25 May 2026 the tourist ETA is free for Indians, but you still apply online before you travel.

An online ETA is required. The fee has been waived for Indians since 25 May 2026 according to news reports, but use the official portal, since third-party sites add charges.

Under two hours from Chennai and Bangalore to Colombo, so it works as a long weekend or a week.
