Songkran Festival 2026: The Complete Guide for Indian Travellers Going to Thailand's Water Festival
Songkran — Thailand's New Year water festival — runs 13–15 April 2026. Here's everything Indian travellers need to know: dates, best cities, cost from India, visa, itinerary, and how to book in time.
Thailand shuts down every April for three days of the most joyful chaos in Asia. Songkran — the Thai New Year water festival — runs 13 to 15 April 2026, and it's already one of the top-trending travel searches out of India right now.
This is everything you need to know before you go.
What Is Songkran?
Songkran marks the Thai New Year and is celebrated every April 13th. What began as a gentle blessing ritual — pouring water over the hands of elders to seek good luck for the new year — has evolved into a nationwide water fight unlike anything else on earth. On Songkran, every street in every city becomes a battlefield. Locals and tourists arm themselves with water guns, buckets, and garden hoses. Getting soaked is not just inevitable — it's the entire point.
The official holiday is April 13–15, but in Chiang Mai the celebrations stretch across 7 full days. Bangkok's Silom Road and Khao San Road become party zones. Phuket's beaches turn into water-soaked carnivals. It's the most exhilarating four days you can spend in Asia.
Songkran 2026 Dates
Monday 13 April to Wednesday 15 April 2026 — official public holiday. Most shops and businesses close. Temples hold merit-making ceremonies in the morning. By afternoon, the entire country is outside with a water gun.
Arrive by April 12 to settle in and join the pre-festival street preparations. If you can take April 16–17 off work too, many cities keep celebrating through the weekend.
Best Places to Celebrate Songkran in Thailand
Not all Songkran celebrations are equal. Here's where Indian travellers get the best experience. For a full overview of everything Thailand offers year-round, see our Thailand things to do guide.
Bangkok — Silom and Khao San Road: Silom is the local favourite — massive water cannons line the street, office workers join in from noon. Khao San is the tourist zone, running from sunrise to midnight. The BTS Skytrain runs packed with people in traditional Thai colours. The scale is something you have to see to believe.
Chiang Mai — Old City Moat: Many seasoned Thailand travellers say Chiang Mai is the best Songkran in the country. The ancient moat surrounding the Old City becomes the nerve centre — water cannons, pick-up trucks packed with locals, and a community atmosphere that Bangkok simply can't replicate. Book accommodation months ahead for Chiang Mai Songkran. If you want the full Thailand experience beyond the festival, start at our Thailand destination page.
Phuket — Patong Beach: If you want beach + Songkran combined, Patong turns into a beachfront water fight arena with DJ sets and open bars running through the night. Great finish to a longer Thailand trip.
What to Expect — and What to Bring
Waterproof bag (non-negotiable): Your phone, passport, and cash go into a sealed waterproof pouch. Available at every 7-Eleven in Thailand for ₹200–₹400. Do not step outside without one.
Water gun: Buy on arrival — ₹200–₹500 at any street stall. Super Soakers and backpack water tanks are everywhere. Bring your competitive instincts.
Change of clothes: You'll be completely soaked within 60 seconds of stepping onto any main road. Pack light, quick-dry fabrics and keep a dry set at the hotel.
Sunscreen: Celebrations run from noon through sunset in 38°C heat. Apply before leaving the hotel, reapply every 90 minutes.
Morning temple respect: The first few hours of each Songkran morning are solemn — merit-making, offerings, elder blessings at temples. Dress modestly and observe quietly during this time. The water fights begin at noon and don't stop until well after dark.
For Indian vegetarians: Chiang Mai has the most extensive vegetarian options in Thailand. Bangkok's Chinatown (Yaowarat Road) has outstanding meat-free street food available 24 hours during Songkran.
