Getting Around Bali: Grab, Gojek, Taxis, Private Drivers and Scooters

Bali has ride-hailing apps, but they are restricted in places. Here is how Grab, Gojek, taxis and private drivers compare, and which is best for day trips.

Quick answer: For day trips, a private driver (about IDR 500,000 to 1,000,000 a day) is simplest. For short hops, Grab works for cars and international cards. Ride-hailing is restricted in parts of Seminyak, Ubud and Canggu, so you may need to walk a few hundred metres to be picked up.

How do Grab and Gojek work in Bali?

You set the destination, see the fare upfront, and pay by cash or e-wallet. One guide says a motorbike ride across Seminyak might cost about US$1 to 2, and a car from Seminyak to Ubud about US$10 to 18. Grab is better for private cars, airport pickups and foreign credit cards, while Gojek is often cheapest for motorbike rides but may reject foreign cards.

Are Grab and Gojek allowed at Bali airport?

Sources conflict. One says pickups from the terminal are not allowed, so use the official airport taxi or a pre-booked transfer; another says both have lounges outside arrivals but fares are inflated. Pre-book your airport transfer to avoid the question.

Where are ride-hailing apps restricted?

In Seminyak, Ubud and Canggu you will see "no online transport" signs. Drivers may ask you to walk away from the pickup point. A 2025 report said new rules include a quota on registered online taxis and a requirement that drivers be Balinese residents; rules may have changed.

What about Bluebird taxis?

Metered Bluebird taxis cost a base fare of about IDR 7,000 plus per-kilometre charges, but they cannot pick up at airport arrivals, and some zones restrict them too.

What is the best option for day trips?

A private driver. App drivers often refuse long routes such as Bedugul or waterfalls. Prices run about IDR 500,000 to 1,000,000 per day (₹2,700 to ₹5,400).

Should you rent a scooter?

We did not verify licence or insurance rules in our research, so check them yourself. Our safety note on scooters explains the risk.
