Best Time to Visit Penang: The Food Island's Driest Months and the George Town Calendar

Penang is mostly a food and heritage trip, so rain matters less. December to February is the driest; September and October the wettest.

Quick answer: The best time to visit Penang is December to February, the driest stretch with sunnier skies for George Town's street art and hill walks. March to May is hot. June to August is mixed. September to October is the wettest. Since Penang is about food, temples and heritage houses, you can visit any month if you carry an umbrella.

Penang by season

MonthsWeatherNotes
December to FebruaryDriest, warmBest for walking tours and Penang Hill; busiest
March to MayHot and humidStart early; indoor museums at midday
June to AugustMixed, some showersFewer crowds; the George Town Festival is usually held in July or August
September to OctoberHeaviest rainCheaper stays; plan food crawls and museums

What to do whatever the weather

Eat through Gurney Drive, Chulia Street and Kimberley Street hawker stalls, visit the Kek Lok Si temple and the Clan Jetties, and ride the funicular to Penang Hill. Beaches on Batu Ferringhi are fine for a swim, though not a Maldives-style beach.

How many days do I need?

Two to three nights is enough. Many travellers combine it with Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi.

Is Penang visa-free for Indians?

Malaysia is visa-free for Indians until 31 December 2026 (up to 30 days), under the conditions listed in our Kuala Lumpur guide. Check for any extension if you travel after that date.
