Where to Stay in Japan: Tokyo vs Osaka vs Kyoto, Ryokan vs Business Hotel, and What They Cost

Quick answer: Sources agree on the order: Osaka is usually cheapest of the big three, Tokyo sits in the middle and Kyoto is the priciest, especially in peak season. In Tokyo, budget business hotels in Ueno, Asakusa and Ikebukuro run about US$70 to 110 a night (₹6,790 to ₹10,670) and mid-range hotels in Shinjuku, Shibuya and Tokyo Station about US$130 to 220 (₹12,610 to ₹21,340). A ryokan is priced differently: it usually includes dinner and breakfast, so ¥30,000 to 80,000 per room near Kyoto's Arashiyama is not comparable with a room-only rate. What does the flight leave for the hotel?

For a 7-night stay on ₹2 lakh for two: Chennai (₹86,734 for two) leaves ₹1,13,266 of a ₹2 lakh budget, about ₹16,181 a night over 7 nights; Pune (₹1,83,886 for two) leaves ₹16,114 of a ₹2 lakh budget, about ₹2,302 a night over 7 nights. Tokyo or Osaka as a base?

Osaka is cheaper and close to Kyoto; Tokyo has the widest choice. Many Indian itineraries fly into one and out of the other.

Is a ryokan worth it?

For one night, yes: you get a traditional room and a set dinner and breakfast. For a whole trip it adds a lot to the budget.
