How do you apply for the Vietnam e-visa?
You need three things: a passport valid well beyond your travel dates with blank pages, a clean digital scan of the passport bio page, and a passport-style photograph that meets the spec — plain background, no glasses, full face.
Then you complete the online form, pay the fee, and wait. Approval usually lands by email within a few working days, though it is not instantaneous and it is not guaranteed to hit the advertised window during Vietnamese public holidays.

What is the single most common Vietnam e-visa mistake?
A mismatch between what you typed and what is printed in your passport.
The e-visa is validated against your passport number and name at the border. If you transposed two digits, or entered your name in a different order to the passport, or omitted a middle name that appears in the machine-readable zone, the approval will not match. At best this becomes an expensive problem at the airport; at worst you do not travel.
Check the application against the passport itself — not against memory, not against a photo of it — before you pay. Then check it again when the approval PDF arrives, because that is your last cheap chance to catch it.
What is the entry port trap?
This is the one that catches experienced travellers.
The Vietnamese e-visa specifies the port of entry, and you are expected to enter through the one you nominated. Nominate Hanoi and then reroute through Ho Chi Minh City on a cheaper connection, and the document no longer matches your actual arrival.
So fix your inbound airport *before* you file, not after. Applying six months ahead is not useful either, because the visa carries a validity window. The sweet spot is once your dates and entry airport are certain, and comfortably before you need to be packing.
What if the approval does not arrive?
First, check spam, then check the status using the registration code from your application — approvals do sometimes issue without the email landing. If the window has genuinely passed, you can refile; the usual culprit is the photograph.
