Vietnam E-Visa for Indians 2026: How to Apply, What It Costs and the Error That Voids It
Vietnam's e-visa is one of the easiest approvals an Indian passport can get — and one of the easiest to invalidate with a single typo. Here is the process, the entry-port trap, and what to do if your approval does not arrive.
Quick answer: Indians need a visa for Vietnam, and the usual route is an online e-visa. There is no consulate visit, no courier, and you do not strictly need an agent. Approval normally arrives by email as a PDF that you print and carry. The two things that most often go wrong are a passport number or name mismatch, which voids the approval at the counter, and choosing the wrong entry port, which is locked into the document. Do Indians need a visa for Vietnam?
Yes. Vietnam requires a visa from Indian passport holders, and most tourists get it as an e-visa applied for online before departure. You cannot turn up and sort it out on arrival. The approval has to exist before you board, and airlines check.
This is one of the lighter visa processes an Indian passport can get. There is no interview, no bank statement in the usual tourist case, and nothing to submit in person.
How do you apply for the Vietnam e-visa?
You need three things: a passport valid well beyond your travel dates with blank pages, a clear digital scan of the passport photo page, and a passport-style photograph that meets the rules (plain background, no glasses, full face).
Then you fill in the online form, pay the fee and wait. Approval usually arrives by email within a few working days. It is not instant, and during Vietnamese public holidays it may take longer than advertised.
Please print the approval and carry it on paper. Do not rely on showing it from a phone with a flat battery at an immigration counter.
What is the single most common Vietnam e-visa mistake?
A mismatch between what you typed and what is printed in your passport.
The e-visa is checked against your passport number and name at the border. If you swapped two digits, entered your name in a different order, or left out a middle name that appears in the machine-readable zone, the approval will not match. At best that is an expensive problem at the airport. At worst you cannot travel.
Check the application against the passport itself, not against memory or a photo of it, before you pay. Then check it again when the approval PDF arrives, because that is your last cheap chance to catch an error.
What is the entry port trap?
This one catches experienced travellers too.
The Vietnamese e-visa names a port of entry, and you are expected to enter through that one. If you name Hanoi and then reroute through Ho Chi Minh City on a cheaper connection, the document no longer matches where you actually arrive.
So fix your inbound airport *before* you apply, not after. If your flight plan is still changing, which is common because Vietnam routings from India move a lot on price, hold the visa application until the inbound leg is settled. How long does the Vietnam e-visa take, and when should you apply?
Apply at least two to three weeks ahead. The processing window itself is usually shorter, but the buffer covers a rejection and refile, a holiday backlog, or a photo that gets sent back for a shadow on the background.
Applying six months ahead does not help either, because the visa has a validity window. The best time is once your dates and entry airport are certain, and comfortably before you need to start packing.
What if the approval does not arrive?
First check your spam folder, then check the status with the registration code from your application. Approvals sometimes issue without the email arriving. If the window has genuinely passed, you can refile. The usual culprit is the photograph.
