Places to Visit Outside India in January: Cool, Dry and Peak Season

January is dry season across Thailand, the Maldives and the Gulf, and wet season in Bali. Here is where to go, and what to book early.

Quick answer: In January the best bets are Thailand, the Maldives, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Sri Lanka's south and west coast, Egypt and Phu Quoc in southern Vietnam. For snow, Hokkaido in Japan. Avoid Bali for beaches (heavy rain), northern Vietnam if you dislike cold grey days, and Mauritius (hot, humid, cyclone season).

What to book early

The Maldives, Dubai and Thailand's islands are busy from late December. Booking by October for a January trip usually leaves choice; booking in December leaves what is left. Check fares on the Flight Finder.

What is the cheapest place in January?

Usually Thailand's cities and Vietnam's south, since fares and hotels are lower than in the Gulf or the Maldives.

Is January good for Singapore?

It is the wetter part of the year, with showers most days, though not cold. It works for a city and Sentosa trip if you carry an umbrella.

Where is it too cold?

Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Sapa) and most of Japan and Korea. Pack proper layers.
