Maldives Money Guide for Indians 2026: Dollars, Resort Bills and the Costs Nobody Quotes
In the Maldives you will barely touch local currency — you will be billed in dollars, taxed on top, and charged for a transfer nobody mentioned. Here is where the money actually goes.
Quick answer: In a resort-based Maldives trip you will rarely use Maldivian Rufiyaa at all — resorts price and bill in US Dollars, and cards are accepted everywhere that matters. The money question in the Maldives is not exchange rates; it is the charges layered on top of the headline room rate: service charge, green tax, GST, and above all the airport-to-resort transfer, which can run into hundreds of dollars per person and is frequently not included in the price you were quoted.

The local currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa, but resorts quote, bill and settle in dollars, and card payment is standard. Unless you are staying on a local island or in Malé, you may complete an entire trip without handling rufiyaa once.
Carry a modest amount of USD cash for tipping and small purchases. Everything else goes on a card, settled at checkout.
Why is the final bill higher than the room rate?
Because the room rate is rarely the whole price, and the additions are predictable:
Service charge — a percentage added to most resort billing. Green tax — a per-person, per-night environmental levy. GST — goods and services tax on tourism. Transfer — the big one, below.
These stack on the base rate, and none is optional. A quote that looks competitive against another resort may simply be quoting a different subset. When comparing, ask for the all-in figure including transfers and taxes — then compare those numbers only.
What does the resort transfer actually cost?
This is the single most under-budgeted item in a Maldives trip.
Resorts are on their own islands. You reach them by speedboat or seaplane depending on distance, and either way it is a chargeable transfer, usually per person, often in both directions. Seaplane transfers to distant resorts can be a substantial fraction of the holiday's total cost.
Two consequences worth planning around. Distance is a cost driver, not just a travel-time one — a resort an hour further out may be materially more expensive to reach, which can outweigh a cheaper nightly rate. And seaplanes fly only in daylight, so a late international arrival into Malé may force an unplanned overnight before you ever reach the resort.

Is all-inclusive worth it in the Maldives?
More often than anywhere else, yes.
On a resort island there is no alternative restaurant, no shop down the road, no competitive pricing. Food and drink are priced accordingly, and a week of à la carte dining plus drinks can approach the cost of the room.
Compare the all-inclusive upgrade against a realistic estimate of what you would actually eat and drink. For most couples on a week-long stay, it wins — and it removes the low-grade anxiety of watching a tab grow, which matters on a holiday whose entire point is not thinking about anything.
Half-board sits in between and suits travellers who plan excursions.
Do you need cash at all?
A little. Tipping is customary and cash is appreciated; small purchases on a local island or in Malé are easier in cash.
Beyond that, a card covers everything. Tell your bank you are travelling, and carry a second card from a different bank kept separately — on an island resort, a blocked card is a genuinely isolating problem.
Is the Maldives cheaper if you stay on a local island?
Substantially, yes — and it is a real alternative rather than a compromise.
Guesthouses on inhabited islands cost a fraction of resort rates, transfers are cheaper public ferries or shared speedboats, and you eat at local cafés. The trade-offs are genuine: local islands observe local customs including modest dress outside designated areas, alcohol is generally unavailable, and the private-island fantasy is not what you are buying.
