Christmas and New Year Trips Outside India: Where to Go, and What the Dates Cost You

Dubai, Bangkok and Singapore have the biggest New Year parties; Japan shuts for its own New Year. Prices peak from about 20 December to 5 January.

Quick answer: For Christmas and New Year, pick Dubai (fireworks and the Shopping Festival), Bangkok (big countdowns at the malls and riverside), Singapore (Orchard Road lights and the Marina Bay countdown), the Maldives or Thailand's Andaman coast for beaches, or Sri Lanka's south coast. Japan is lovely but many shops and restaurants close from about 29 December to 3 January for its own New Year. Prices peak from roughly 20 December to 5 January.

What each place offers

PlaceChristmas and New Year feelWatch for

BangkokMall countdowns, river eventsCrowds on the river and at CentralWorld
SingaporeChristmas lights, Marina Bay countdownRainy season; book early

Sri Lanka south coastBeach parties in Galle and MirissaBusy but laid-back

How to save money

Leave before 15 December or return after 5 January where you can. For a short trip, midweek departures are usually cheaper. Check fares for your dates on the Flight Finder, and ask for a quote that shows flights, hotels and transfers together.

Is Dubai worth it for New Year's Eve?

Yes if you want fireworks and crowds; no if you prefer quiet. Hotels near the best viewing spots cost the most.

Where is the quietest New Year?

The Maldives on a private island, Sri Lanka's hill country, or Japan's onsen towns.

Do I need a visa?

Thailand and the Maldives are the easiest for Indians. Dubai, Singapore and Japan need visas, so allow time. Malaysia is visa-free for Indians only until 31 December 2026.
