Best Time to Visit Bhutan From India: Spring, Autumn and the Festival Calendar

Bhutan is best in spring and autumn. The monsoon runs June to August. Indians do not need a visa but pay a daily fee and need a permit.

Quick answer: The best time to visit Bhutan is March to May (rhododendrons, mild weather) and September to November (clear skies, festivals, the best Himalayan views). December to February is cold but sunny, and good for cultural trips in Paro and Thimphu. June to August is the monsoon: rain, leeches on trails and occasional landslides. Indian citizens do not need a visa but need an entry permit and pay a Sustainable Development Fee of 1,200 rupees per night, when we last checked.

June to AugustMonsoonGreen, cheaper, trekking is hard
September to NovemberClear and dryPeak season; Thimphu Tshechu in autumn
December to FebruaryCold, sunnyFewer visitors; snow on high passes

Planning tips

Flights into Paro are limited and fill early, especially for festival dates. Hotels are booked in advance because the entry permit is tied to your itinerary. Altitude varies a lot: Paro is above 2,200 metres, and passes go higher, so allow an easy first day.

Do Indians need a visa for Bhutan?

No visa, but a permit and a valid ID or passport. The daily fee for Indians was 1,200 rupees per night at the last check; confirm the current rate with the Tourism Council of Bhutan.

How many days do I need?

Five to six nights covers Paro, Thimphu and Punakha, including the Tiger's Nest hike.
