Schengen Visa for Indians in 2026: Appointment Hacks, Fees & New ETIAS Rules
Europe remains the dream destination for many Indians, but Schengen visa appointments are competitive. Here is the 2026 guide to fees, documents, VFS slots and the new ETIAS system.
Europe continues to top the wishlist for Indian travellers in 2026, but the Schengen visa process is still the biggest hurdle. Appointment slots fill fast, rules vary slightly by country, and a new entry system called ETIAS is on the horizon. Here is what you need to know.
Which Schengen country should you apply through?
Apply through the country where you will spend the most nights. If you are visiting France, Italy and Switzerland equally, apply through your first port of entry. Each country uses VFS Global or its own embassy in India, and appointment availability varies by city. France, Italy and Spain tend to have the most slots; Portugal, Greece and the Netherlands can be tighter.
Documents Indians need for a Schengen visa
You generally need a valid passport, two photos, confirmed travel itinerary, hotel bookings, travel insurance of at least €30,000, bank statements for the last three to six months, ITR, a cover letter, and proof of employment or business. Requirements are strict and inconsistent, so get the exact checklist for your country before you book an appointment.
Appointment hacks for 2026
Book your VFS appointment before you book hotels. Slots open 3–6 months ahead and vanish quickly during summer and December. Check early morning hours, as cancellations are often released then. If you live in a tier-2 city, consider travelling to Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai or Hyderabad for better slot availability.
Fees and processing time
The Schengen visa fee is around €90 for adults, plus VFS service charges. Processing usually takes 15 calendar days, but it can stretch to 30–45 days during peak season. Apply at least six weeks before your travel date, and do not make non-refundable bookings until you have the visa.
What is ETIAS and should Indians worry?
ETIAS is a new pre-travel authorisation system for visa-exempt travellers entering Europe. It does not replace the Schengen visa for Indians — Indian passport holders still need a Schengen visa for short stays. ETIAS mainly affects travellers with dual nationality or those holding visas from other countries, but it signals that Europe is tightening entry controls overall.
