The Great Migration Is Starting — Why June 2026 Is the Perfect Time for an India-to-Africa Safari
The Great Migration crossing begins in June. Kenya's Maasai Mara and Tanzania's Serengeti are at their most dramatic June–October. Direct flights from India are now available. Here's everything Indian travellers need to know before booking an Africa safari in 2026.
The Great Migration — 1.5 million wildebeest crossing the Mara River between Kenya and Tanzania — is widely considered the greatest wildlife spectacle on Earth. June 2026 is when it begins.
For Indian travellers, Africa has historically felt distant and expensive. Both perceptions are increasingly outdated.
The Migration Calendar
The Great Migration follows a circular route through the Serengeti ecosystem across two countries:
January–March: Calving season in southern Serengeti, Tanzania. 500,000 wildebeest calves born in a 3-week window. Predator action is intense.
April–May: Herds move north through central Serengeti. Long rains, fewer tourists, lower prices.
June–July: Migration reaches the Western Corridor of the Serengeti and begins approaching the Mara River. The first dramatic crossings happen in July.
August–October: Peak crossing season at the Mara River. Crocodiles. Wildebeest. The most photographed wildlife moment in the world. Maasai Mara (Kenya) side is closest to the crossings.
November–December: Herds move south again through central Serengeti.
For Indian travellers with school holidays in May–June or October, both windows are genuinely excellent. For the iconic river crossings, July–October is the peak.
Getting There from India in 2026
Flying to Africa has become meaningfully easier for Indian travellers in 2026.
Nairobi (NBO), Kenya is the main gateway. IndiGo now operates flights from Mumbai and Delhi to Nairobi. Air India connects Delhi to Nairobi. Flight time: 6–8 hours. Return fares from Mumbai or Delhi: ₹35,000–55,000 depending on season and airline.
Kilimanjaro International (JRO), Tanzania serves the northern Serengeti region. Typically routed via Nairobi or Dar es Salaam. Add ₹8,000–15,000 to the base India fare for the internal connection.
For both Kenya and Tanzania-focused safaris, flying into Nairobi and doing a mixed Kenya–Tanzania itinerary is the most common approach. See our Kenya travel guide and Tanzania travel guide for route planning.
What Does a Kenya–Tanzania Safari Cost for Indian Travellers?
Africa has a reputation for being expensive. The honest answer: mid-range safari is comparable in total cost to a Maldives trip; luxury safari is significantly more.
Budget-to-mid-range safari (3 nights in Maasai Mara, shared tented camp): ₹80,000–1,10,000 per person all-inclusive from Nairobi, excluding flights.
Mid-range safari (4 nights, private tent, mixed game drives): ₹1,30,000–1,80,000 per person excluding flights.
Luxury safari (5 nights, private conservancy, dedicated vehicle): ₹2,50,000–4,50,000 per person excluding flights.
For most Indian families or friends groups doing their first Africa trip, the mid-range tier delivers an extraordinary experience — private tented accommodation, daily game drives, park fees, and all meals included in the price.
Beyond the Migration: What Else Kenya and Tanzania Offer
Africa safaris are often combined with beach time — and both Kenya and Tanzania have excellent options.
Diani Beach, Kenya is a 2-hour drive south of Nairobi and features the clearest water and whitest sand on the East African coast. A 3-night Diani extension to a Maasai Mara safari creates an exceptional two-week itinerary.
Zanzibar (accessible from Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro by short flight) is the Indian Ocean island just off Tanzania's coast — Arabic architecture, turquoise water, spice farms. One of the best beach-safari combinations in the world. See our Zanzibar guide for more.
Mt. Kilimanjaro — the world's highest free-standing mountain — rises 5,895m from Tanzania's plains. Non-technical summit (Marangu or Machame routes) is achievable for moderately fit travellers. Trek duration: 6–9 days. A Kilimanjaro climb plus safari plus Zanzibar beach is the ultimate East Africa trip for active travellers.
Visas for Kenya and Tanzania
Kenya: India passport holders can apply for an East Africa Tourist Visa online (covers Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda) for $50. Processing typically 2–5 days.
Tanzania: E-Visa available online for $50. Processing 3–7 days.
Both countries have streamlined their visa processes for Indian travellers. Trripah handles the documentation as part of all East Africa packages.
How to Book
East Africa safari planning requires more lead time than most destinations — the best camps for July–August crossings are booked 4–6 months in advance. If you're considering a 2026 migration safari, now is the right time to move.
