Japan in 2026 — Why Every Indian Traveler Has This Country on Their List (And How to Finally Go)

Japan tops travel wishlists for Indian travellers in 2026 — and for the first time, it's genuinely affordable. The weak yen, new direct routes, and cherry blossom season in April make this the year to finally go.

Japan has been on every serious Indian traveller's list for years. It keeps getting pushed back because of three persistent objections: it's too expensive, the language barrier is too hard, and the itinerary feels too complicated. In 2026, all three excuses have gotten weaker.

Why 2026 is the year for Japan

The Japanese yen has been weak against the Indian rupee since 2022, and it has not significantly recovered. In practical terms: a full day of transport, meals, and activities in Tokyo costs about ₹3,000–4,500 per person if you eat smart. That's cheaper than Bali in 2019. A bowl of ramen costs ₹300. A subway day pass is ₹600. A night in a clean business hotel in central Tokyo: ₹5,500–8,000.

Air India operates direct flights Delhi to Tokyo (Narita) and Delhi to Osaka. Return fares range from ₹38,000–60,000 depending on season. IndiGo and other airlines connect via Singapore or Bangkok in 9–12 hours total.

Cherry blossom season — book NOW

Sakura (cherry blossom) season in Japan falls roughly between late March and mid-April, varying by city. Tokyo peaks around late March. Kyoto around early April. Osaka mid-April. Hiroshima and Sendai slightly later. April 2026 is the window — and it's the single most beautiful and most sought-after time to visit Japan. Hotels are filling up. Book in the next 2 weeks if you want to go this April.

The India-to-Japan itinerary that works

A 10-day Japan trip that covers everything: Days 1–3 Tokyo (Shibuya, Shinjuku, Tsukiji, teamLab if you can get tickets). Day 4: Bullet train (Shinkansen) to Kyoto — ₹3,500 for the JR Pass day. Days 5–6: Kyoto (Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama, Gion). Day 7: Nara (deer park, Todai-ji temple). Day 8: Osaka (Dotonbori food street, Osaka Castle). Days 9–10: Return to Tokyo or fly home from Osaka (KIX).

What it costs

Budget (hostels, ramen, public transport): ₹1,00,000–1,20,000 per person for 10 days including flights. Mid-range (business hotels, mix of restaurants): ₹1,30,000–1,60,000 per person. The Japan Rail Pass (7-day) costs about ₹25,000 and is worth every rupee if you're moving between cities.

Visa

Indian passport holders need a Japan Tourist Visa — apply at the Japanese Consulate at least 2–3 weeks before travel. The process is straightforward but requires a completed application form, passport photos, flight itinerary, hotel bookings, and bank statement. Trripah handles the documentation preparation.
