Georgia Is the New Bali — Here's Why Indians Are Flocking to Tbilisi in 2026

Visa-free, direct flights from Delhi, cobblestone old city streets, incredible food, and prices that make Bali look expensive. Tbilisi, Georgia is 2026's breakout destination — and almost no one from India knows about it yet.

Every few years, one destination breaks through from 'travel nerd favourite' to mainstream Indian bucket list. Bali did it in 2015. Vietnam did it in 2018. In 2026, that destination is Georgia.

Not the American state. The country — sitting between the Black Sea and the Caspian, sandwiched between Russia, Turkey, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, with Tbilisi as its ancient, architecturally wild capital.

Why Georgia is having a 2026 moment

Several things aligned recently. Air India Express and IndiGo launched direct or single-stop routes from Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore to Tbilisi's Shota Rustaveli International Airport (TBS). The journey takes 5–7 hours. Indian passport holders are visa-free for stays up to 365 days — yes, a full year, no application needed. And prices are extraordinary: a full day of sightseeing, meals, and transport in Tbilisi costs ₹1,500–2,500 per person.

Tbilisi's old city

Tbilisi's old city (Altstadt) is unlike anywhere else on Earth. Narrow cobblestone lanes winding uphill to a 4th-century fortress. Sulfuric bathhouses (hammams) where the water comes naturally hot from the ground, operating since the 5th century. Persian-style balconies overhanging the streets. Orthodox churches that predate most European cathedrals. All of it walkable in half a day and completely free.

Food and wine

Georgian food is extraordinary for Indian palates — khinkali (soup dumplings), khachapuri (cheese bread in several regional styles), grilled meats with pomegranate-walnut sauces. Georgia is one of the world's oldest wine-producing regions, with an 8,000-year tradition. A full dinner with wine at a good restaurant in Tbilisi: ₹1,200–1,800 per person.

Beyond Tbilisi

Kazbegi — a mountain village 2 hours north of Tbilisi, with a famous hilltop church (Gergeti Trinity) directly in front of the permanently snow-capped Mount Kazbek. One of the most stunning views in the world. A day trip costs ₹2,000–3,000 per person including transport.

Kakheti wine region — Georgia's premier wine country, 2 hours east of Tbilisi. Vineyard tours, cellar tastings, and harvest season visits (September–October) are spectacular.

What it costs from India

Flights from Bangalore (via Istanbul or Delhi): ₹28,000–42,000 return. 6-night trip including a good Tbilisi hotel, meals, day trips to Kazbegi and Kakheti: ₹50,000–70,000 per person. That's cheaper than Bali and significantly more unique right now.
